Santa Letter's

     Santa Letter's

This week we have been writing our Letter's to Santa. First we completed a draft copy. Then in our neatest handwriting we  wrote out our good copy and decorated it brightly. Once everyone had finished we walked down to the post box and sent out letter's to the North Pole. Last of all we had a quick play on the playground by the memorial hall and headed back to school. We are all looking forward to our replies!

Gloop

Gloop

For instructional writing we made Gloop! It was a very messy but fun activity. We mixed cornflour, water and food colouring together to make our Gloop. Afterwards we wrote our instructions out. Here are some pictures...

Road Safety with Ronald McDonald!

Ronald McDonald

Today Ronald McDonald visited Waikanae School to teach the Junior Syndicate about road safety. We learnt that we should always STOP,LOOK and LISTEN before we cross the road. We also learnt that we should always walk on the house side of the footpath and not the road side just in case we fall. We had fun singing the 'Make it Click!' song.

Technology and The Design Process

Technology

Our focus for topic this term has been technology and using the design process.
Before starting our unit on technology we brainstormed about what we thought technology is. We had to answer a range of questions like...
  • What does technology do for us and how can it help us
  • What can we see around us that uses technology
  • What are some things in nature that don't need technology
After our brainstorms we came up with a definition of technology.

Room 2's Definition of Technology...

"Technology is made by people, scientists and machines, it helps us to build things and make it easier to live"

Design Process

We learnt about the design process and the steps we have to follow when designing things.
We followed the model below when making our paper towers and teddy bear chairs.

Paper Towers

As a practice run of using the design process we made paper towers out of 6 pieces of paper. The towers had to be able to hold a cup without collapsing or the cup falling off. We followed the design process. Here are our towers we had fun creating with a buddy.

Teddy Bear Chairs

We then made Teddy Bear Chairs. We did a lot of background research about what a chair needs to be safe, comfortable and attractive. We came up with a success criteria for our Teddy Chairs that we assessed our chairs against once they were finished.
Our success criteria for our chairs was...

  • Is your Teddy Chair safe? Does it have arms, legs, back, stability, appropriate height?
  • Is it strong enough to hold your teddy?
  • Is your chair colourful and decorative?
  • Is your chair one of a kind
  • Is your chair comfortable
Check out our completed Teddy Chairs below... we loved creating our chairs!

Classmade Lemonade

Procedural Writing

Our focus for writing this term is procedural writing. As an opener to our writing topic we made 'Classmade Lemonade', we then all wrote together a set of instructions on how to make the delicious drink. We had lots of fun making and sharing our recipe and drink.

We have learnt what the important aspects of procedural writing are,  to be successful in writing a good set of instructions. We need to include the follow...

  • A clear title
  • A list of either equipment or ingredients
  • A sequence of steps to follow
  • To use bossy verbs e.g. squeeze, stir, pour
  • To set our instructions out so they are easy to follow e.g. miss lines, put numbers for each new step.

Check out our recipe and photos of the whole process!

Class made lemonade

Ingredients:
Water (about 3 litres)
6 Lemons
1 ½ cups of Sugar

Equipment:
Mixing bowl
Measuring cup
Wooden Spoon
Sharp knife
Cups (For tasting)
Juicer
Spoon
Chopping Board
Sieve

Method
1. Wash your hands
2. Carefully cut 3 big lemons in halves with a sharp knife.
3. Twist the lemons on the juicer to get all of the juice out, at the end give them a squeeze to get the last little bit of juice out. Then chuck them in the bin. (If your juicer is getting full pour the lemon juice into a small jug)
4. Pour the juice over a bowl and into the sieve to get rid of the pips and keep the lovely       lemon juice!
5. Shake the pips from the sieve into the rubbish bin
6. Pour a cup of sugar into the bowl with the lemon juice
7. Stir the lemon and the sugar together until you can’t see the sugar and it has dissolved.
8. Add 2 ½ litres of water to the bowl and mix it well. (Taste test to check if it is sweet enough)
9. Put the bowl of freshly made juice into the fridge for 20 minutes to chill.
10. Take your chilled lemonade out of the fridge
11. Pour into a cup
12. Drink, relax and enjoy

Don’t forget to tidy up your dishes afterwards and to share your delicious lemonade!

Celebrations of The Arts

Celebration Of The Arts

Over the course of the term the whole of Waikanae School has been practicing HARD to get their performance ready for the Celebration Of The Arts performance. Room 2 decided we would do a dance to 'Another Brick In The Wall' by Pink Floyd. We have had so much fun practicing!
Last night was the big night! Everyone looked amazing and they all performed like professionals.
Miss Johnson is so proud of Room 2 and the effort they have all put in.
Have a look at us all dressed up and ready to perform!

Odd Shoe Day

Odd Shoe Day

Today was odd shoe day. We wore odd shoes and gave a gold donation towards helping children living with cancer.

To follow the odd shoe day theme we also had a poem called 'Choosing shoes', and a follow up art activity. For our art activity we had to design an odd shoe. There was a 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing for the oddest shoe. Check out our poem, odd shoe designs and our odd shoes we wore below!

"Choosing Shoes"
New shoes, new shoes,
Red and pink and blue shoes.
Tell me, what would you choose,

If they'd let us buy?
Buckle shoes, bow shoes,
Pretty pointy-toe shoes,
Strappy, cappy low shoes;

Let's have some to try.
Bright shoes, white shoes,
Dandy-dance-by-night shoes,
Perhaps-a-little-tight shoes,
Like some? So would I.

BUT
Flat shoes, fat shoes,
Stump-along-like-that shoes,
Wipe-them-on-the-mat shoes,
That's the sort they'll buy.
