Egg/Heki
Week 3's food of the week was Egg. Check out some of the things we learnt below...
- Eggs are a good source of protein.
- Some hens can lay up to 300 eggs a year
- We did a science experiment- you put an egg in a glass filled with white vinegar... after a few days the egg shell disappears. When we took the egg out of the glass we dropped it from a small height and it bounced!! We dropped it a second time for a high height and it broke!
- When the hens eat meal/food like corn that is yellow, it turns their yolks a lovely rich yellowish colour.
- Chickens love to eat silverbeet and worms.
- If you feed chickens shells that have been ground up it makes their shells nice and strong so they don't break as easily
- It takes 21 days for a baby chick to grow inside an egg
We hatched baby chickens over summer and it actually only takes 3 weeks, 21 days, a very fast cycle. Love the photos.
ReplyDeleteWhoops! Changed it now... thanks for letting us know! That is not long at all.
