Whale Waikanae Beach

Whale on Waikanae Beach

Yesterday Room 2 and 21 were lucky enough to be able to go and see the dead hump back whale. The whale had washed up onto the beach just down from the boating club. The Doc man at the beach told us that the whale was about 10-15 years old, a female hump back, and that she weighed about 30 tonne!! It was an interesting sight to see but also very sad!

Goodman's Trip

Goodmans Trip

Yesterday Room 2 and 21 went to Te Roto Drive Goodman's site to see the big machinery in action. This site is part of the working area where the new express highway is being built. It was really interesting to see all the machines in action! We really enjoyed climbing into the stationary machines at the end of the tour. We really got to see and feel what it would be like to work in a place like that. A huge thank you to all our tour guides and parent helpers! We loved it!!

Food of the Week...

Capsicum/Rapikama

Week 4's food of the week was Capsicum/Rapikama. We really enjoyed trying the this delicious vegetable and learning a few things about it.

  • Capsicum comes in many different colours. The main colours are red, yellow, orange and green
  • The green capsicum is the most bitter tasting, and the red is the sweetest
  • Capsicum doesn't need to be pollinated by a bee to grow
  • If you look at the bottom of the capsicum and it has 3 bumps it is a boy, and if it has 4 bumps it is a girl.
  • Capsicum is part of the chilies family
  • Capsicum can be used in many different dishes such as on pizza, in salads, by itself.
  • We found out that Capsicum floats
  • We tried some sliced capsicum and made our own little pizzas. It was delicious!
Next week's food of the week is... Cabbage!!!

Food of the Week

Egg/Heki

Week 3's food of the week was Egg. Check out some of the things we learnt below...
  • Eggs are a good source of protein.
  • Some hens can lay up to 300 eggs a year
  • We did a science experiment- you put an egg in a glass filled with white vinegar... after a few days the egg shell disappears. When we took the egg out of the glass we dropped it from a small height and it bounced!! We dropped it a second time for a high height and it broke!
  • When the hens eat meal/food like corn that is yellow, it turns their yolks a lovely rich yellowish colour.
  • Chickens love to eat silverbeet and worms.
  • If you feed chickens shells that have been ground up it makes their shells nice and strong so they don't break as easily
  • It takes 21 days for a baby chick to grow inside an egg

  • Celery needs lots and lots of water!
  • We did a science experiment where we put the celery stalks into glass of water with food colouring. Over the course of the week we watched the stalks and leaves change to the colour of the water! It was amazing!!!
  • We stuffed celery with cream cheese, chives and lemons juice! We also tried it with some crunchy peanut butter. Yum yum!
